How to become an entrepreneur of your existence
Much has happened since I wrote my first book, A Marketing Plan For Life. A great financial tsunami has swept over our world.
The economic meltdown was the catalyst that caused us to re-assess our core values and take a step back to re-visit our definition of “true” success. During the financial crisis, a litany of bank and real estate failures triggered double-digit unemployment rates. Once venerable institutions seemed to be built on unstable foundations of quicksand. Highly admired CEOs came under sharp attacks. The very fabric of the American Dream appeared to be coming apart at its seams. But the American Dream was not dead... it was we who had gone amok by straying from the core values that made this country great.
Our Declaration of Independence reinforces the values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There’s nothing written in the document about four chickens in every pot, using your home as a cash cow account or driving all alone in a gas guzzling SUV.The valuable lessons we learned from the economic meltdown will provide the jumpstart we need to re-visit the American Dream: a dream that focuses on self worth as much as net worth, a dream that exemplifies what author Nelson Henderson meant when he spoke to his son on graduation day, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
In many ways, the turbulent times we’ve been through in the last (or should I say “lost” decade) will likely be transformative. It may very well be the silver lining we need to ignite our personal renaissance, enabling us to become entrepreneurs of our own existence. It may help us understand more fully that true success is all about giving back.
Numerous surveys and Gallop polls indicate that we are increasingly getting back to our core values and honing in on what really matters most. There is less emphasis on showing off bling and more focus heeding our true calling in life. We are putting a lid on indiscriminate spending. We are beginning to understand the notion that our valuables are not nearly as important as the people and causes we value.
In A Marketing Plan For Life, I made the point that the same principles inherent in a good marketing plan could be reapplied in ways that could lead to a more balanced, fulfilling, and meaningful life. The fact is that many corporations and financial institutions took short cuts and departed from the sound business principles and corporate values that helped them become highly valued entities in the first place. Other companies like Apple, Google, Southwest Airlines and Amazon continued to thrive even in chaotic times by sticking to their core values.
In business, a marketing plan needs to be continuously re-examined and modified as market conditions change. This needs to be done on a personal level as well. As our personal situation changes or unexpected events alter our lives, we need to continuously re-examine our core values and goals for shifts in our reality.
